Judo - General Background
Published reports are indicating that General Motors will move up the production of their updated line of GMC and Chevrolet pick up trucks by three months with the new models making their debut in October 2006. Some are calling this move an act of desperation on the part of GM which has been socked by extensive criticism over its product line, while others are hailing it as a bold, strategic initiative. Regardless, this is an unusual move for the world’s number one automaker, one that could help the company get back on its feet. Let’s take a look at the new trucks and what they will offer to you, the consumer.
1. Fresh sheetmetal. All new exteriors with a modified and sportier front end.
High gas prices, quality problems, and a perception that the company offers products that no one wants has been plaguing General Motors for much of the past year. With plant closures coming, layoffs pending, and market share decreasing, little good news has been focused on “the general” by the automobile press. Fortunately, GM is battling back with fresh models set to be released including SUVs and trucks, which are the “bread and butter” vehicles of the company. Here is what you can expect to see when the new trucks enter the market in Autumn 2006:
2. Modified engines. Traditional work horse engines which have powered GMC trucks for much of the past decade are expected to return. However, displacement on demand technology, which shuts down unneeded cylinders at certain times [city traffic being one example] is expected to be incorporated on some motors. This technology effectively increases gas mileage without sacrificing performance.
Judo today is one of the most wide-spread martial arts in the world, with reputedly more than 8 million students. Practitioners are referred to as judoka and competitions (Shiai) are conducted under the supervision of a referee and a judge. Contests and training take place in the judojo (hall). Free-style combat in Judo is known as randori; the submitting opponent is known as the uke, and the winning partner is referred to as the tori in Judo.
4. Interior upgrades. Changes to the trucks’ interior as well as to packages offered will be some of the “inside” changes noticed by consumers.
It is worth bearing in mind that Kano did not create Judo to be a public competition sport, and he felt strongly that it was a personal art to train the body and the mind. He insisted that its mastery required and appreciation of the inherent philosophy that supports all aspects of Judo. With this in mind, it is interesting to know the oath that all Judo students at the Kodukan dojo (the name given by Kano to his dojo) must make on admission: “Once I have entered the Kodukan dojo, I will not end my study without reasonable cause; I will not dishonour the dojo; unless I am given permission, I will not disclose the secrets that I have been taught; unless I am given permission, I will not teach Judo; pupil first, teacher second, I will always follow the rules of the dojo.”
Professor Jiguro Kano, the founder of Judo, graduated from the Imperial University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1881. He attended several Ju-jitsu schools, seeking to develop a system of physical exercise. He adopted the best principles of each ju-jitsu system and called it Judo. Literally translated, it means “gentle way”. Kano’s interpretation, however, was “maximum efficiency”.

General Motors’ Dealer Relations ‘Have Come a Long, Long Way’
There are two main types of electric motors. There are direct current or DC and alternating current or AC motors. The reference of DC or AC refers to how the electrical current is transferred through and from the motor. Both types of motors have different functions and uses. Dc motors come in two general types. They can have brushes or be brushless. AC motors, as well, come in two different types. They can be two phase or three phase. The differences in DC and AC motors are sometimes subtle, but these differences are what make one types better for a certain use.
Change Management at General Motors in Oct of 2006
With Lovejoy as the point man, a contrite GM methodically went about repairing the damage, promising miffed dealers that the auto maker would keep out of the retail end of the business. The damage control worked.
These days dealers’ complaints center, not on distrust of the auto maker as a potential retail competitor, but on getting more hot products - hardly a novel dealer gripe.
"I just had a meeting with some California dealers and they had nothing but good things to say," says Cowger. "I spend a lot of time with dealers. I ask them what we can do better. The conversations are good. If they have problems, they tell me."
Cowger says that, in retrospect, GM should not have tried to get GTOs to every Pontiac dealership because regional demands vary for the all-new vehicle with the revived nameplate.
Direct current or DC electric motors work for situations where speed needs to be controlled. DC motors have a stable and continuous current. DC motors were the first and earliest motors used. They were found, however, to not be as good at producing power over long lengths. Electric companies found using DC motors to generate electric did not work because the power was lost as the electric was transmitted. Brush DC motors use rings that conduct the current and form the magnetic drive that powers the rotor. Brushless DC motors use a switch to produce the magnetic drive that powers the rotor. Direct current motors are often found in appliances around the home.
The Difference Between AC and DC Electric Motors
It looks like General Motors is getting ready to lay off a whole bunch of people in the tens of thousands. Recently Mr. Kirk Kerkorian has been trying to buy up more shares of General Motors and continue to take over the company. It makes sense from his standpoint to buy General Motors stock on the cheap and then repair the mistakes and watch the stock go back up again. He stands to make a tremendous amount of money when General Motors recovers.

"Our dealer relations have come a long, long way in the last few years," says Gary Cowger, GM’s president of North American operations. "Bill Lovejoy did a great job there."
Lovejoy, who is now on the board of directors for United Auto Group, the nation’s second-largest dealership chain, was named GM’s fix-it man in 2000 after the auto maker acknowledged it made a big mistake with a plan to buy and run up to 800 dealerships, a proposal that infuriated GM dealers. They saw it as violating territory rights.
One of the board members who is on Kerkorian’s side has left the board and one has to wonder if he has left the board because he was thrown out or because General Motors is getting ready for massive layoffs and they do not want their main guy involved in board decisions when employees are being laid off. Because in the future the employee unions would not respect the board members who were on the board at the time of the layoffs.
William Lovejoy retired from General Motors Corp. two years ago but the former vice president of sales and marketing is still remembered at corporate headquarters as the guy who fixed the auto maker’s banged-up relationship with its dealers.
