Tai Chi Chuan - general background
Sunday's races are round #2 of the 2007 Oregon Region SCCA Road Racing Championship presented by Fluge Global Adventures.
Portland, OR (PRWEB) April 21, 2007 — Round two of the 2007 Oregon Region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Road Racing Championship presented by Fluge Global Adventures is scheduled this Saturday and Sunday at Portland International Raceway.
Among the more than 130 northwestern drivers competing this weekend is event sponsor Monte Shelton in his Porsche 911T that took first place in the SPO category at the first round of the championship on March 4. Also competing is Nick Fluge in his Fluge Global Adventures 2006 Corvette in the ITE classification.
The Monte Shelton Jaguar Regional Races consists of eight different combined groups competing in 12 races with practice sessions beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. and race qualifying starting at 1:15 p.m. The first of six Sprint Races, each lasting 20 minutes, begin Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
Finishing order in the Sprint Races determines starting grid positions for the six 30-minute Main Races, which get underway at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, with the Vintage race group up first. General Admission, seating and parking are free for the weekend, courtesy of Monte Shelton Jaguar.
All six race weekends in 2007 count towards Fluge Global Adventure class championships and take place at Portland International Raceway. Portland International Raceway is owned and operated by the City of Portland through its bureau of Parks and Recreation.
The raceway is operated as an Enterprise Fund, meaning that its operating expenses and capital improvements are covered by the revenues that it generates, as Portland International Raceway receives no general fund tax dollars. The raceway's varied, year round activities contributes over $45 million and 690 jobs to the surrounding community each year.
Individual event sponsors all hail from the Portland metropolitan area, including Monte Shelton Jaguar, Temp-Control Mechanical Corp., Gran Prix Imports, Pro Drive Racing School, and Brewer Construction. Race cars range from exotic purpose-built sports racers and open-wheel formula cars, to GT, sedan and vintage cars.

He has driven eleven times in the 24 Hours of Daytona and took third in 1979. He also raced seven years in the Trans-Am series, scoring five wins, with three second-place finishes and two third-place showings. He was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

At this level, the art is accessible to anyone. Age, health or infirmity is not barrier to reaping some of the rewards that Tai chi chuan has to offer. However, to reach the higher levels it is necessary to study the art in its wider context. Practising the martial aspects of Tai chi chuan involves more complex form of Chi kung, body strengthening, practising with another person and various supplementary exercises. Such training is more demanding than basic form practice, but it does bring greater benefits in terms of mental and physical health, as well as providing an excellent self-defence method. At the higher stages the theoretical aspects of the art also become more apparent.
The roots of SCCA and Oregon Region run deep in racing history. The origin of SCCA can be traced back to the pre-World War II "Auto Racing Club of America" which disbanded because of World War II. Originally, the State of Oregon was included in the territory of Northwest Region, SCCA (NWR), and it remained that way until the official creation of Oregon Region in 1962.
From its beginning, Oregon Region SCCA has been organizing and administering sports car/club racing events at Newport, Goshen (South of Eugene) and Portland's West Delta Park (now Portland International Raceway - PIR). The Region's first race was held at the Newport municipal airport (an ex-WWII air base) in 1962.
In Practice:
The initial aim of Tai chi chuan is to teach the practitioners to relax. Relax does not mean to flop loosely around, but rather to use the body as efficiently as possible, with no muscular tension. The foremost requirement is good posture with relaxed shoulders, an upright back and firmly rooted stance. Tai chi chuan incorporates Chi kung exercises, which encourage deep breathing, improved blood circulation and greater efficiency of the body’s systems. On a mental level, the quiet concentration, required for Tai chi chuan brings a serene state of mind, in which the everyday stresses of life can be placed in their proper perspective. This leads to a more tolerant, even state of mind, and a calm mind is able to respond more quickly and effectively to challenges in any situation.
