How to remove the alternator in a 2002 Pontiac Montana?

JoeCool asked:

Hi,

This question is for someone who has actually replaced the alternator in a Pontiac Montana (hopefully 2002). I have replaced alternators on other cars, but the space on this seems too tight to pull the alternator out. What has to be removed to remove / replace the alternator? It looks like maybe some of the windshield wiper control arms, but even that doesn’t look like it will open up enough space. This van does not have a cover inside the van to remove for engine access.

I know, this is real hard to get to. I have a Chevy venture with a similar situation.
Looks like to me, on mine at least, that you have to take, the plastic piece , that covers the wiper stuff off.
Your best bet would be to go buy a Chilton’s book on it. Sometimes you can ask the person at the auto parts store, they are very knowledgeable.
Also they might have instructions with the new altenator.
    Good luck

Remove the front engine torque mounts (dog bones). Put the car into neutral and attach a strap to the engine lift hook and the other end around the radiator support bar. Pull on the strap so that the engine moves toward the front of the car until you have enough room to remove the alternator and then secure this position.
